No problems from the first attempt.

Thank you very much.

The first few minutes of steam will carry off the smell. The remaining water should then taste fine. Basically, this boils off into the air the foreshots and heads, leaving the hearts.

Let the distiller cut over to hearts before collecting your distillate. If you empty the receiving container, you probably can still smell the odor. Wash it, and stick your nose in there to really check the odor is gone. On the next run of the distiller, let the first drips go into another container. Smell that. It probably has the odor. Keep going, using a clean glass to keep sniffing the drops coming out. When the odor is gone, you are now getting the hearts, the distillate — the H20 in this case. The first few drips of any run, and probably the next 250ml to 200 ml in total, is a combo of what is called the foreshots and heads in distillery terms. If you are using filtered water, it can still contain various compounds, mostly salts. You just clean your machine, so you might have coated the insides with soap and cleaner, no mater how well you washed it out. The hard stuff left at the bottom of the distiller is mostly salts. As the machine boils the water, the first run of steam includes whatever boils at under 100 degrees Celsius. That is what is contaminating the rest of you 4 liters of water. Just discard the first 250ml to 300ml, or less as long as the odor stops by keep sampling the smell, and your final 3.x liters of water will not smell. Technically, you don’t want the tails either. The last few drips might contain things that get into the steam above 100C. Because the machine runs it pretty dry, clearly its built in tempature gauge isn’t clicking things off very fast. The heating element is probably taking the chamber above 100C. So the last bit of water, might be tails. But if you are using filtered, it’s probably fine.

I had the Metal-Taste-Problem twice. In my homemade distiller (which had been working fine), and in the brand-new purchased distiller.

Your post was a life saver.

THAANKS!!

I just purchased a new distiller after my old one had a loose cord. The first two gallons of water smelled awful. My cats won’t drink it and neither will I. I was worried that I’d have to return it. I am going to try this when I get home from work. I hope it solves our problem. We don’t want to buy and carry gallons of water home from the store.

The bad taste comes from two things:

1) The fan gives off smell and thats picked up by the water so it tastes the same as the air smells. Solution run the machine outside the house, not inside, and it doesnt pick up the smell.

2) This is gross: inside the 1 meter long stainless steel tubin their is black dirty industrial grease. I put a tops inside it and it came out with black petroleum oil. I ran boling water mixed with detergent through it and the distilled a batch of water wich I discarded.

The solution from your support guy might be very good. Its of course complete bullshit that your scrubbing caused the bad taste. Its true that vinegar is polishes and removes rust/iron from steel. But the real benefit for you was probably that when you ran a batch of vinegar/water through the dirty tubing, it removed the black petroleum oil.

I will run some vinegar through my own new machine tomorrow. Thanks for lettings us know this.

/Roger

Its very well written; I love what youve got to say.
But maybe you could a little more in the way of content so people could connect
with it better. Youve got an awful lot of text for
only having one or 2 images. Maybe you could space it out better?

Comment on Gentoo Linux sucks by hawk /2011/01/11/gentoo-linux-sucks/comment-page-1/#comment-12293 Fri, 14 Jan 2011 04:27:34 +0000 /?p=919#comment-12293 It’s entirely possible I’ll have trouble with Ubuntu on down the road.

At work, we’ve got about 30 servers. Most of them (25 or 26) are Ubuntu servers. There is no GUI, no X Server. They’ve been running solidly for years.

With CentOS, or Red Hat, or Fedora, I always seem to get in to RPM Dependency Hell, which is a black hole. So I formatted over that black hole and installed Ubuntu and I’ll have to say, I do like it. It doesn’t treat me wrong, and (mostly) works very, very well.

I’ve never used Debian, so I can’t comment on it. But I have you guys for that. 😉

I tried to use/upgrade/downgrade the udev package in Gentoo but none of it helped. It still stands that I had a stable system, upgraded, and then I had a system which would not boot up again. From a SysAdmin point of view, there is a technical term for this: bad.

So I tend to gravitate to those systems which give me the least trouble, and are the easiest to administer.

Just look at the author of the second link. He was almost as pissed as I was. But he was (at least) able to repair the system. Whereas I ran out of time.

You will also be notified of this when upgrading udev. But that is easy to miss when you don’t read portage elog messages.

Debian should have been your choice.
